Now we are reaching the tail end of what has been another enthralling edition of the Premier League, many of us like to take a retrospective look back over the past season and analyse just who has made the furthest strides in terms of improvement. If you were so kind to take a look at my ‘let down’ XI of the season most recently as yesterday you would have found that the performances of Petr Cech, Rio Ferdinand and Dirk Kuyt haven’t been quite what we’ve come to expect following their illustrious and outstanding contributions in seasons gone by.
So this time, I have turned the tables and decided to concentrate on the top ten ‘most improved’ pros this campaign. Perhaps receiving stick in the past or not really fancied as a long-term solution to a particular position, these players have had an excellent 2011/12 and have reminded everyone that they are here to stay as sturdy and assured footballers going forward.
Whether a player has stepped into the breach and performed against the odds or simply whether a player has upped his game coinciding after gaining a few years’ experience playing in England, there are many examples of these tremendous personal feats achieved in this countdown. So let us start with an improving Newcastle United full back.
