Speaking on Sky Sports, Paul Merson has suggested Tottenham’s top four hopes would hang in the balance if Christian Eriksen leaves the club in the next few weeks.
What did he say?
Eriksen has been the subject of intense transfer speculation in recent weeks after admitting that it could be time to experience a new challenge. Reports had suggested Manchester United were keen on a potential swoop for the Denmark international but a move failed to materialise before the end of the deadline.
However, with the transfer window in other major European leagues still open, Eriksen could yet secure a potential transfer to the likes of Real Madrid or Juventus.

Now, Merson has revealed the 27-year-old’s possible departure would strike a massive blow to Spurs’ chances of finishing in the Champions League spots this season.
He said: “I’d go as far as to say that if he went before the transfer window shuts, I’d be surprised if they got into the top four. I watched them against Aston Villa and they’d run out of ideas. There was nothing really happening for them. Harry Kane wasn’t getting any service as Villa kept things compact.
“Eriksen came on and it was a completely different last 25 minutes. He put the ball through the eye of a needle, he played little one-twos and he has vision. You do not want to lose him before the window closes.”
Something different
As Merson points to, the Danish playmaker’s cameo against Villa reminded Spurs what they stand to lose if he were to leave this summer. The former Ajax star has the ability to provide a number of goals and assists for the north London side and would leave a gaping hole in that number ten role.
Finishing in the lucrative Champions League places gives sides both a footballing and financial incentive to do well. Losing Eriksen would simply weaken Spurs’ chances of doing so, and that is something Mauricio Pochettino must think about carefully.
Would the money they potentially get now, outweigh the benefits of him firing them into the top four this season? From his displays in English football, Eriksen has shown he has so much to offer and should surely be kept, even if he walks away on a free next summer.
