da aviator aposta: Aston Villa are interested in signing Southampton forward Charlie Austin before the end of the January transfer window, according to The Telegraph.
What’s the story?
Well, The Telegraph have claimed that Southampton and Austin have come to an agreement that the striker can leave for the right price this month.
Austin has started just twice in the Premier League since Ralph Hasenhuttl took over in early December and it is clear that the forward does not fit into the plans of Southampton’s new head coach.
According to The Telegraph, Villa are interested in signing Austin, but the Championship club could face competition from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Austin joined Southampton from QPR in January 2016 and has scored 20 times in 71 appearances for the club in all competitions (Transfermarkt).
There will certainly not be a shortage of interest in the 29-year-old, who looks set to leave St Mary’s before the winter window comes to a close.
Should Villa make a move for Austin?
In a word, yes. If Villa can acquire Austin for the right price then the move is an absolute no-brainer for the Championship club.
Austin has previous experience of Championship football with Burnley and Queens Park Rangers, with his record in the second tier standing at 66 goals in 129 appearances.
Austin has also managed 34 goals in 97 Premier League appearances, which is not exactly a poor record.
It remains to be seen whether the 6ft 2in forward is prepared to drop back down into the Championship having worked hard to become a Premier League footballer.
However, Villa would have arguably the deadliest strike-force in the Championship if they managed to secure his services, with on-loan Chelsea ace Tammy Abraham currently enjoying a fine campaign at Villa Park.
