da realbet: At The Belfry this summer, two Liverpool icons will square off against each other, representing opposing sides in the hotly-anticipated ICONS of Football 2017 tournament. Robbie Fowler will be part of Lee Westwood’s England side taking on a Rest of the World team including Dirk Kuyt in a Ryder-Cup-style golfing clash between some of the beautiful game’s greatest. But how do these Anfield heroes compare when stacked up against each other? Let’s take a look.
da marjack bet: Fowler was hailed as simply yet definitively ‘God’ during his time on Merseyside, a moniker justified by his incredible goal tally alone as one of the earliest members of the Premier League’s 100-club. In that regard, Kuyt simply doesn’t compare – finishing his English top flight career with less than half the goals of the former England striker.
Yet, that term applies to Fowler somewhat loosely; despite his impeccable form for Liverpool, injuries and a huge wealth of competition up front saw him represent England just 26 times on the international stage. In comparison, Kuyt’s Netherlands career spanned a decade and saw him become a centurion for Oranje, amassing 105 caps in total.
In terms of silverware too, Kuyt comes out on top, although Fowler may argue his trophies were more meaningful. Whilst Kuyt only lifted one during his time at Liverpool – the 2011/12 League Cup – and won the rest during spells in his homeland and Turkey, all five of Fowlers were earned with the Reds, most notably the UEFA Cup in 2000/01.
But their footballing careers will have little consequence when Fowler and Kuyt tee off against each other at The Belfry, so perhaps what’s most intriguing about this battle is their identical handicaps – minus ten – pointing towards an incredibly close-knit affair at ICONS of Football 2017.
