da spicy bet: Without wanting to sound too premature five games into a Premier League season, West Ham are in trouble.
da heads bet: Trouble, not in the sense that they are going to be relegated this season, but in real danger of losing all of that momentum they built up from last season – some would argue that’s already gone.
The Hammers came into this season with a real sense of optimism heading into their new stadium, signing new players and possibly playing in Europe but so far all three aspects have fallen on their faces.
The stadium’s issues are well documented, the new signings haven’t been as good as last year’s just yet anyway and let’s not dwell on Europe for the sake of the Hammers fans reading this.
Things need to be sorted out quickly or it could be a really mediocre year for a club that was striving for so much more this season but after another 4-2 loss at West Brom, that’s looking far off.
Nearly the whole team underperformed against the Baggies on Saturday but above the rest, these three had particularly shocking games…
Arthur Masuaku
The French full-back had an absolute nightmare all game and that tone was set from the very early stages in the game. He gave away a free-kick for a handball and then handled in the penalty area from the resulting re-start. Nacer Chadli duly dispatched it and Masuaku duly went to pieces. He seems to suffer rushes of blood at key times and in West Ham’s plight at the moment, they could do without that.
Simone Zaza
Zaza was signed with the idea in mind that he’d be a more reliable goal threat than Andy Carroll but on this performance, the crocked striker can’t come back soon enough. Ineffectual would be praise after this showing in which he didn’t even look close to threatening the West Brom goal and was consequently hooked at half time. He needs to buck his ideas up quickly.
Adrian
Confidence-wise, Adrian looks shot to pieces and that was pretty much the state of his goal too by the end of the game at the Hawthorns. He was pretty reliable last season as the Hammers did well but this season he is struggling with the real basics in an alarming decline for Slaven Bilic.
