da realbet: Arsenal have made a very promising start to this new Premier League campaign, following an opening weekend win over Newcastle with another three points against Burnley on Saturday. It is the first time in 10 years that they have won the first two matches of a league season.
In the fixture against the Clarets, Dani Ceballos made his first start for Unai Emery’s side since joining on loan from Real Madrid. The 23-year-old put in exactly the kind of creative performance the Emirates Stadium outfit need moving forward, and may just have shown that Mesut Ozil’s ingenuity can be replaced.
AFTV’s Robbie has his say on Arsenal’s owners in the video below…
Offensively, the Spain international was Arsenal’s most dangerous player. He mustered three shots, which was the joint-highest of all of his teammates alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and he also created three chances, which no other player in red could match. It therefore comes as no shock that he created both of the Gunners’ goals, which were scored by Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang.
Surprisingly, he also topped the dribbles count with four. Bearing in mind that winger Reiss Nelson, who is adept at beating his man, also started the match, it is impressive and shows another weapon that the former Real Betis man has in his armoury.
Despite playing in a central position behind main striker Lacazette, Ceballos also attempted the most crosses for the London side with five. Two of them eventually found their man which, once again, was not bettered by team-mates or opponents.
In recent years, Arsenal’s main creative influence has of course been Ozil, but the Germany international’s impact on the Arsenal team has waned. Last season, he only managed two assists throughout the whole of the Premier League campaign – that number has already been matched in two games by Ceballos, only one of which he started.
Ceballos is arguably a better fit for Emery’s more energetic style of football too. He pressed high up the pitch to win the ball for Aubameyang’s goal, one of the two tackles he made throughout the ninety minutes. That’s not a huge total overall, but it still betters Ozil’s average per game in the Premier League last season by 1.5.
When he came off with eight minutes left on the clock, the midfielder’s work was done. And on this showing Arsenal may just have found the man to replace Ozil as their playmaking force under Emery.
