He explained: “Jurgen Klopp is very much like the new Sir Alex Ferguson.
“What I mean by that is that he is running this club from top to bottom. He is making sure that the academy football is being played the same as the first team. When they come through, they know their jobs, they know their jobs, they know where to be, who to listen to.
“They have got good seniors around them, good pros who do the job properly, no flash Harrys, and they love it. They love playing with them, they respect them and the seniors respect the kids.”
Against the modern trend
The Anfield outfit’s performance and subsequent triumph against a strong Everton side said a lot about the strength in depth available to Klopp. The 52-year-old made nine changes to the team that beat Sheffield United 2-0 on January 2nd, and three of those to start the match were teenagers. The match-winner, Jones, is just 18 years old.

The fact that the youth sides do play in a similar fashion to the first team shows two things. Firstly, it clearly shows that Klopp has a huge influence across the board in the north-west. Having been there since October 2015, and with a contract that runs until 2024, he is clearly trusted to set up a dynasty. That allows him to mould those youngsters and blood them into the first team.
Secondly, it shows that the Reds have a long-term plan rather than just signing big names on a regular basis. In the summer, Liverpool spent under £2m and, although they have recently added Takumi Minamino, he cost just £7.25m. Already, Klopp has said that more January business is unlikely. By keeping the philosophy across all age levels, it clearly shows that the former Borussia Dortmund plan is being allowed to build from the bottom, and he will be trusted to rejuvenate the team through a transition period.
It is this kind of long-term planning that leaves them in such a strong position as they top the Premier League table. Of course, Klopp has a long way to go to match the great former Scot, but the system is being put in place to allow him to leave a similar mark on English football.
